stuck in the house?

Updated: Apr 14, 2020

Whether you're stuck in the house because of the craziness of the world going on right now, or it's just a Friday night and you didn't feel like making plans, here are some things that I've done, to keep me busy! :)

#1 RANDOM ARTS AND CRAFTS

If you're like me, and you used to be super creative, but now you're a teenager with no motivation to do anything except sit on your phone and scroll through social media all day, this quarantine can be something to get your brain moving and help bring back some of that creativity you've been missing out on for many, many years! I have lots of markers, colored pencils, notebooks, paper, and paint sitting around so I've decided to actually do something with those! (and it's been a lot of fun to embrace the creativity that's been hiding inside me for so long) Here are some things that I've done to spark some joy during self distancing! :)

T H E F R O N T D O O R

So since Easter was coming up, my mom had been on Facebook, and saw people painting their doors like this, and she asked me to do it to ours. So, having nothing better to do, I did! :) And it was surprisingly lots of fun, and it took up a few hours, I wasn't bored that day, and it turned out so colorful and pretty! 10/10 worth the time and effort!

W A L L D E C O R

Okay this one's a little weird, but stay with me haha. I saw this on youtube, and thought I'd give it a try since my walls are a little bare and boring. Here's the final product!

all of the things you need:

- a stick (got one from literally my backyard haha)

- yarn

- scissors

- acrylic paint (optional)

easy enough right?!

here are some pictures i took as i was making this, steps are in the pictures but i'll elaborate on the side!! :)

S T E P O N E

so the first step was to cut pieces of yarn, i did three pieces per section. then i looped that yarn around the stick so that the ends were all cut and the loop didn't look like a knot. (this was a trial and error process so don't worry if it takes you a few minutes to figure out how to loop the yarn.

S T E P T W O

i then alternated each section of yarn between a knot, a braid, and just kept the third section hanging normally. this took a veryyyy long time, which was good (because i had nothing else to do hahah)

S T E P T H R E E i cut the yarn even at the bottom, but after i hung it up i decided to cut it so that the middle was lower than the sides because even just looked a little boring. (look at the finished product if you don't know what i mean)

S T E P F O U R

this is COMPLETELY optional, i only did it because the yarn looked plain to me and the whole point of this was to add some color and decoration to my wall! so i just took regular acrylic paint and faded red, orange, and yellow together. i think it turned out pretty good! :)

this definitely took a good two or three hours, and it was SO worth it to be able to add something new and colorful to my room! :)

#2 CLEANING AND ORGANIZING

This is a fairly obvious one, but I've gotta say that throughout quarantine I have organized so many aspects of my room in lots of different ways, and I'm STILL finding new ways to switch things up and figure out how I want my room to look. Some things most people don't mention when they are giving you things you can clean:

- go through your dresser and grab a trash bag! get rid of some things that you know you're not going to wear anymore, you can go ahead and throw that bag in the trash OR you can save it and donate those the next time you get the chance! :)

- do the same thing with your closet! personally, i keep random bags, hats, and blankets in my closet, as well as obviously clothes and shoes, and when i cleaned it out i made lots of room for other things to store in there! for example, i had some blankets that i previously didn't have room for, and once i was done cleaning out my closet, i had space for those! (pro-tip : if you look at it, and you can't remember the last time you used it, or even SAW it, get rid of it!!!)

- if you have a bookshelf with ACTUAL books in it (probably less than 1% of people haha) donate some of those books! or all of them if you haven't read for joy in a long time. i, personally, don't read anymore unless it's the Bible or a christian book, or self care, because school english classes give me enough reading. so i got rid of a LOT of books that i had as a kid. of course i kept a few just in case ;) but this is a good way to have even MORE space for things that you actually use on the daily! i use my bookshelf for art stuff, and my Bible and daily devotions, and the bottom shelf is for a few books that i kept, and things that i find myself reaching for, maybe once a month.

- cleaning your room and bathroom can be lots of fun!!! grab a speaker, throw on some music and have a BLAST while dusting and vacuuming and all that fun stuff! music makes everything better!! ;)

#3 MORE JESUS TIME

This break has given the majority of people more time to do the things that normally, between school, work, and sleep, they didn't get to do as often. I've been trying my hardest to be more focused on reading my Bible and really getting into the word. Some tips that have helped with my motivation to sit down and study the bible:

- have fun with it! some people think reading the bible needs to be strictly pen and highlighters and a quiet room. but people worship through many different ways. one thing you can do, is pick out a random bible verse that you love. write it down, stick it on a mirror, that way it'll be easy to memorize! take that bible verse, and a plain piece of paper, write it down, and take either markers, colored pencils, watercolor paint, whatever you want, and make it as colorful and fun as possible! here are some examples of ones i've done! :)

These are just a few ways to have fun with trying to memorize a verse!

- put on worship music while you study! there are thousands of playlists on Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, Youtube, pretty much anywhere you can think of that have music to get you in the mood to read your Bible.

- pray before you read! ask God to open your mind and heart to His word, and this truly does help when reading and studying the Bible

- spend a little extra money on more supplies! it's seriously not about how cute or colorful your Bible is, but for some people, the color is how they learn and how they gain motivation to read.. i just purchased an ESV Scripture Journal off of amazon, but there are plenty of other websites to purchase these from. they're basically the books of the Bible, in actual book form. and after each page of scripture, there's a lined page for you to either take notes, or decorate it with your favorite verse from that page! you can buy them in bulk, or buy one book at a time. i'm currently studying Luke right now so i just bought that one, for only $6. i also bought a Faith and Focus Planner from christianplanner.com , and i am so excited for that to come it so that i can plan all aspects of my life, in one planner! i bought a new devotion book off of lifeway.com , because unlike my other daily devotions, this one has questions to answer each day so that i actually engage in the reading and apply it to my life. i'm in the process of purchasing some plain brown notebooks and watercolors to use as prayer journals. i'm going to use the watercolors to decorate the fronts of the notebooks and i can't wait to get all of this stuff in the mail!! :)

- switch things up! get outside and study! grab a blanket or beach towel and sit in the grass with your bible, any notebooks you need, and some pens and markers, and enjoy worshipping God while soaking up the sun and feeling the warm breeze! :)

We have no excuse to put of studying the Bible anymore, because we can't go anywhere or do anything with friends (or at least during the state of the world right now, we shouldn't be), so sit down and grab your Bible and spend some time with Jesus today!!

those are just a few things to keep you busy during quarantine. obviously there are the basics that everyone else is doing: working out, self care type things, baking, watch new movies on netflix, but i just wanted to share some things that i've been doing to be creative as well as get moving and do something other than sitting in bed all day! (which is obviously perfectly fine, no shame in that at all!!!)
